Haven't following the entire tread but I'm and advocate for lower
power rather than higher. I was dismayed to see a recent article on
the ARRL or eHam site saying 100W wasn't enough and 200-250W rigs
were what was needed. Yet I had solid copy on a French Polynesian
station that was running about 20W on 20M PSK31. I'm in Central OR
listening on an old vertical stuck in rock without any ground radials
(next project).
Which brings me to the next HF rig - it is software driven (Carl, get
ready), and LCD screen, and jacks for Mic, key, and keyboard. In
fact, it will take input from one of those portable/folding PDA
keyboards. It will be the size of the Argonaut or smaller - very
lower power consumption. Maybe an internal Gel Cell with built in
"smart" regulator so It can kept plugged into traditional power
supply, other battery (car) or solar cell array.
But even though it can be software controlled, maybe at least keep a
tuning knob with a dimple - just so we know it's a rig.
73,
Paul
