Try a white paint stick to highlight the number on the connector shell. Or
try colored tape following the standard rest. Color code. Or file a small
notch into the edge of connector shell 1, two into shell 2 etc. Then you can
terminate the cables by feel. Does not seem any more of a problem then
trying to read the labels on the rear of the typical computer!

The real problem with my serial card is the octopus cable. One plug to the
card, four DB9's to the accessories - and the numbers are very hard to see
in bright light. In near total darkness it has been easier to play eenie
meenie miney and there's moe at last with the device driver than to try to
figure out just which port you are attached to. However, since I only have
one option left the next time should not be a problem.
