Hello Group:
I have read quite a few comments about SPAM and VIRUSES on the TecTec Users
Reflector. There is some mis-information and confusion out there. I will
try to explain how best to deal with these issues for the home, less than
highly technical user.
The thing is, I have been seeing lots of comments about integrating HF Rigs
and computers and networks and software updates and software solutions.. The
thought hadn't occurred that a lot of EXCELLENT radio ops might not have the
same proficiency with computers.... OK, enough said.
To begin with each.. Please have a subscription to a quality virus scan and
repair service. EVERYONE who goes surfs on line WILL sooner or later get a
worm, virus or some other infection. That is WILL GET! No other
explanation necessary for our purpose. There are more than one virus
protection programs out there. I like Norton's for a variety of reasons.
By subscription, I mean that the program is continuously upgraded as new
infections become apparent. This not necessarily expensive. I bought mine
on Half-Bay (part of eBay) for about 10 or 11 dollars. This was complete
with a subscription for a reasonable amount of time. All the other
solutions that I have can offer are 100% free.
I can see no correlation between the version of windows used and either SPAM
(internet QRM) or viruses. However; there is a correlation between Outlook,
Outlook Express, and both SPAM and virus type infections. I could easily
write a couple of pages about these correlations and all the fixes Microsoft
has provided . So, don't get me started!
If you are heavy into these, well, least consider the free down load of
Eudora. There are three ways of setting this up after the download. First
There is Eudora Lite. This is a good program. Next, there is a Eudora with
more features and a little more difficult to use. It comes in both a
sponsored and a paid version. The only advantage to the paid mode is that
it is minus a small advertisement square which is advantageous only to
some business applications.
I would carry things a couple of steps further. Everyone should have at
least one or two web based accounts. Very briefly, These are very well
filtered and checked for Viruses. When You open an email the email is not
copied to your hard disk. Hotmail, allows you to set up a list and receive
email from no one not on the list. For example, you might set your list to
accept only the TenTec Reflector.
The best, I have found, of the many available is Yahoo.com. You have a lot
of other freebies such as calendar, personal online file and picture storage
and Pop mail checking. That lets you check your "regular old email" on line
without downloading it to your compute's hard disk. Tip: If you compose a
long message such as this save your work periodically by using the "save
draft" folder.
Next, everyone should have a special unique online address in order to
receive such things as lost passwords, order confirmations and status
reports , special information requested and 95% of your SPAM.. This is the
address you give when a form requires an email address.
Your email address should contain at least a number or two. SPAMMERS use
computer generated variations of most logical and common email address
names. Such as larry, beverly, or citygal. I experimented and read the
email headers. Using larry@xxx, the spam level was very high. Using
larrylg@xxx made little difference. The headers reveal larrylg@xxx.
larrylh@xxx, larryli@xxx- and on and on and on. So insert a number. A name
like larrylg2@xxx or bchs1967@xxx generate and attract much less spam.
Other little things that might help include downloading a free " firewall"
program such as Zone Alarm or a free Pop up Ad stopper such as Popup
Stopper by Panicware.
I AM NOT SURE WHAT THIS HAS TO DO WITH TENTEC GEAR BUT IT HAS BEEN DISCUSSED
HERE A LOT AND ALL OF US EACH AND EVERYONE USE COMPUTERS AND EMAIL.
