The reason that many of the "other" radios have built in tuners is so that the bipolar amplifiers could be made ot work into a reasonable 3 to 1 SWR range without folding back power. Many of these early radios without tuners folded back or distorted with SWR of 1.5 or 2 to 1. Many of the built in tuners are mere band flatteners capable of providing the radio only a 3 to 1 or so capability which is no better than the robust TenTec amplifier design does without a tuner. The TenTec design approach of designing a Crunch proof 100 watt amplifier with at least a 3 to 1 full power capability will make it easy to use many antennas over the whole band without tuner and without blowing up the radio.
