probably an optical encoder and the RIT encoder is a contacting 
{switch] type encoder.  I suspect the two are not directly 
interchangeable.  You could build a simple interface using a couple 
transistors making your remote encoder "look" like a contacting type 
but I imagine the pulses pre revolution are many times greater in the 
remote encoder, so tuning would be more touchy.
