Folks,
It is called competition. If they make a product hams want, hams will buy
it. Ten Tec produced a good product that competed directly with the Kachina
product. The difference was that is was substantially less expensive. One
can argue that the Kachina was better (I don't know just for the sake of
argument), but the Ten Tec product is very good and people seem to like it -
and it is a lot less money.
The number of hams continues to grow. People will buy the radios if the
manufacturers make a radio hams want. Look at the Yaesu FT-817 portable -
it is blowing off the shelves. Why is the Ten Tec line popular? Well they
are just easier to operate. When will the Japanese learn that I don't want
to have to carry a book to remember how to operate the radio. Too many
menus and buttons and features that Joe Sixpack ham just doesn't use. All I
keep seeing are more of the same radios that are more complicated to
operate.
Build a better mouse trap, at a lower cost and people will buy it.
