I find that most 12V radios typically don't work reliably on 12V. They
really require about 13 to 15 volts.
This is kinda like the days when we referred to the household voltage of
110 or 220 volts. It hasn't been 110 or 220 volts in years. Or like
car batteries considered to be 12V. The charging values run 13.4 to
14.6 depending on temperature.
Many radios use internal regulators that output 10V. These require some
1.4 volts min above the regulated value, some more, to properly
operate. Considering even a small IR drop from the battery to the radio
plus 1.4 volts one can see that 12V is not adequate.
