This feller answered the puzzlement -- case closed (see below).
Trouble today with a CW only rig is that little additional circuitry is
required to make it a SSB rig, too. That was not the case in the AM days
when a good modulator was as expensive as the RF deck. The screen
modulation of the DX-40, etc., was not too swift, although cheaper.
Limiting the market for a rig today by making it CW only would surely serve
some of us, but at the expense of many sales. It's probably not a
worthwhile venture for Ten-Tec to make such a rig methinks.
