I found this tidbit at http://www.boinklabs.com/library/cpq1690.html
relating to the 1694 Laptop and Linux use. Sound: ESS Technology Solo1 (ES1946) Groan... Previously not supported at all by OSS Lite (stock with Linux kernel). Supported by ALSA drivers, but kinda flaky, a real PITA to set up and not fully compatible with all that software out there written against the OSS interface. However, the latest Linux kernel (2.2.12) is supposed to support the Solo1 (esssolo1.o), but I have not yet been able to get it working. I'm working to resolve this with the module maintainer. Of course, you could just pay the $30-something for the OSS commercial ESS Solo1 driver... (www.4front-tech.com) I found some drivers available for FTP from ftp.esstech.com under /pub/audio/pci/es1938-es1946. Unfortunately the "lowest" driver is for Win95. In the file 1165.zip there is a COM file which MAY BE something that would do you some good. I have been able to get it working fine on a Dell, but no luck on a Presario 1694.
