Thanks for another perspective, Shelby. I personally don't relate to it,
but the opposite view complements my own. Part of the difference may be how
each of us defines "easy" and "fun". Accordingly, Sprints aren't for
everyone.
My first Sprints (CW) were not a lot of fun as I struggled to make QSOs in a
fast-paced environment with the VFO and exchange order constantly changing.
In my case, I persevered because I believed that any improvement I could
make would reduce the struggle and pay off in other contests and operating
in general. In time, my enjoyment increased and now it is a favorite
contest.
After years of experience the Sprint format is very comfortable, but still
exhilarating. That's why it's fun. And it continues to hone my operating
skill. Sprints are a critical part of my contest portfolio.
Another dimension of Sprint that I love is the deviation that happens with
some operators not following the default exchange format, or not staying on
frequency for the second QSO, or continuing to stay on the frequency for
successive QSOs, etc. These unexpected breaks in the pattern are fun to
deal with in the best way possible with quick decisions. Again, this was
frustrating at one time, but with experience these instants break the
routine and make the session interesting for me as I try different ways to
deal with each circumstance.
For example, several times last night I dropped my call in after a QSO
finished. So did some other stations. When the station on frequency didn't
come back to anyone, I called one of the other callers, we quickly QSO'd and
I QSY'd. That was a lot more fun than forgoing a QSO and bemoaning the
standard Sprint routine not being followed.

I'm not quite sure I understand the reasoning behind that statement? As far
as I'm concerned, "the easier it is, the more fun it is"? Other than the
time frame for the practice and regular Sprint, the QSY rule is the main
reason I don't participate. Regardless of the reason, choosing not to
participate is not an "earth shaking" event, and hardly worthy of posting
on a list where 99.9% of the subscribers couldn't care less?
