I don't know that I qualify as a "wizard", but I do have 50+ years of
RTTY under my belt. One of the things I haven't seen mentioned is
listening to the actual audio tones as they are received and decoded by
the program. An operator can develop "eye - ear" coordination to help
spot trouble with decoding. A static crash, a TX vfo "wiped" across your
RX channel, clicks, QRN, QRM, QSB, selective fading. . . all these
issues raise the probability of a bad decode.
In my opinion, you need to listen to the audio to be aware of the
"quality" that the decoder has to work with. That helps with your
decision whether the other fellow has your call correct or not. Of
course I suppose that skill doesn't apply too well if you are using SO2R
or a wide-band multi-channel decoder.

My call was slightly garbled, but I didn't call twice as I
considered that given how fast he came back to to me
as someone said eariler, it's an imperfect dance
seems like you nailed that one
I suppose what is the best balance is to only call twice if it is
unequivocally clear that the running station has my call wrong.
repeating your initial double call is probably the move
no report yet, but this is just once and then
play or move on
So if we work and I don't think he got my call correct, as Jerry
says, just work him again. If that goes well, all is fine. If in
the strange event he responds back, "QSO B4 or DUPE," then all is
still fine as that confirms that I am in his log correctly (although
I have now wasted time figuring that out).
no
you skipped making sure eariler
now you completed that
I really think that each contest is a refinement of playing the game
I'd really like to watch some of the Single Op wizards someday
as it would be educational for many times later rethinking it
back the real work now
