"RTTY Roundup has grown from 295 logs submitted in 1989 to 1922 logs in 2013 -- a major increase in participation. The most significant increase in participation has come from the DX side. From only 60 DX logs in 1989 it has grown to 936 logs in 2013. In fact, while US/VE logs decreased slightly this year DX logs showed a healthy increase of more than 15% over last year.

The 2013 RTTY Roundup had good balance with nearly equal log numbers coming from US/VE and the DX locations. The breakdown *in increased operation* is: Africa 1.4%, Asia 18.6%, Europe 70.2%, North America (outside W/VE) 3.2%, Oceania 2.8% and South America 3.8%. By entry category the logs were 511 SOLP, 203 SOHP, 97 MSLP, and 90 MSHP."

From the ARRL webisite.

So no, it is a WW Contest just a lot different from most other contests. Just like WPX is different from WW.

Conditions despite the flux were not good. The radio Blackouts continue today and the flux is at 237.

Do you think the difference is that it is the AMERICAN Radio Relay League RTTY
Roundup vs CQ's Worldwide contests? The perception by DX stations being that it
is a US contest, rather than a WW contest?

IMHO, Its not just this last session. Like Don, I've noticed it every time I
get into the RU, which I admit has not been that often in recent years. Its a
major RTTY contest but DX participation from my perspective is down for RU when
compared to others like CQWW RTTY contests where there's lots of DX. One could
simply prove or disprove this theory by comparing the numbers of DX entries
across the major RTTY contests.

The lack of DX can be explained by the propagation reports for Saturday and
Sunday. They were exceptionally poor.

"The overall appearance of a lack of DX in the Roundup still amazes me. If this
had been WPX or CQWW, 10 and 15 meters would have
been wall-to-wall Europe starting here at 1300Z and probably going well past
2000Z with the high flux we had. That doesn't happen in
Roundup. Or least that doesn't happen here during Roundup."Don - I agree.
Personally, I think the rules/awards don't give DX much incentive to get into this
one nor do they give US stations muchincentive to work DX, particularly on 80 and
10. I usually can't do much in this contest due to its proximity to the holidays,
but that's just me. This year was no exception.JohnNN1SS (ex K1FWE)
