What advantage is gained from the XY scope that isn't available from a 
waterfall display from the point of view of signal tuning?

In handbooks of yesteryear there used to be many scope picturse of odd 
looking XY displays with explanations as to why they looked like that, 
fading, multipath, that sort of thing.  You don't see those any more.
