It's just my opinion, but I think high-gain antennas are not a wise
choice for contesting. DXing, yes, but not contesting. The higher the
gain, the narrower the beamwidth and that can be a definite
disadvantage. If one does have a stack of monobanders, one should also
have a small yagi or a dipole/vertical handy.

The other things you mentioned are all skill-related and not
hardware-related.
