Dear Don, Wolf
Thanks for encourage words.
In EU we have an advantage in het wpx, espially on the lower bands we can
make many qso's outside our onw country each qso is worth 4 points.
I use max. this advantage and put up extra antennas on the lower bands.
F6IRF, Pactrick, had a clever plan to run mostly low bands only the weather
was not cooperative.... but maybe next time.
I have 20 years of DX experience on low bands in propagation and antenna s.
I used a radio an a halve during this test, in major contest I setup
writelog with two decoding windows using two soundcards. I scan the bands
with the second vfo even on different bands : vfo a on 80 vfo b on 40 or
vfo a on 21 -vfo b on 14. It has costed me hours of setting this up but
but it is working.
The use of two soundcards has been explained on this reflector.
It is a poor-man SO2R set up.
Writelog is not very SO2V friendly but I change manually the transmitter by
pushing the tx-buttom (red buttoms) of the vfo's.
For the operators who are intressed to see my windows in writelog, I can
send them a picture (email adress is below)
I have also taken pictures of my antenne setup during the contest.
I must say that I have been reading Don's contest stories again and again so
see how he is handling contests, so my teacher is, as by many, AA5AU.
It has been my 4th wpx rtty in a growing line but the "OO" prefix added this
time some 200 to 250 qso 's.
I use AFSK because I have one COM port to short on my PC, and I known what I
am doing : no overdrive, AFC or not, NET or not... .

I agree with Wolf. This is a super score low power - congratulations to
Dirk
for a great effort!!! What's more remarkable is that he did it AFSK with
one
radio. That's really special and says a lot.
I support the WPX rules 100% even though they are a disadvantage to USA
stations. How do explain someone who has 200 more QSO's and a lower score
by
400k points? That's just the way it is. I'm not complaining. Just stating
an
observation. It's not impossible to win this contest from the USA because
I've
done it three times but it's pretty damn hard.
I applaud stations that use their advantage to maximize their scores.
That's
what it's really all about.
Again, congrats to Dirk and to F6IRF (and others - haven't checked 3830
today)
who had excellent efforts. It's what RTTY contesting is all about -
improving
and succeeding. It's an exciting thing to see happen.
73, Don AA5AU

Wow...what a weekend !
There where about 12 contest going on hf ... the wpx rtty is one of my
favourites. It is all about prefixes instead of being in a rare zone/dx
country.
I like the max. 30 hour period for single operators and the extra points
for
40/80m qso s.
I was well prepared with extra antennes and goals the only unknow parameter
whas
the propagation but this time the condx where the best in months.
The weather condx where severe during the weekend: snow, rain (qrn) an very
windy but my temporaly wire antannes where holding up.
The extra points for lower band qso s are very welcome and so the new
prefixes
in Europe due to new operators coming from VHF.
Despite some qrn everything went smootly, not very high rates (max.
60/hour)but
I kept going. I had the feeling that I was almost every hour on a good band.
I worked many JA on 20 m band at 12.00z on sunday.
The "OO" prefix was a good thing to use and an advantage.
With the beam almost to the Northpole I made a lot of USA an VE qso s in all
call area s, the multi counter was counting fast.
With the 40 m antenna I worked JA with only 50 watts after I was setting the
ALC
to low in the heat of the battle.
The receiver in the Mark V with roofing filter and narrow I.F. INRAD filters
is
an advantage on such crowded bands. I was able to dig in the mud as never
before. Or stations could come closer to me without interference.
My equipment was holding strong.
I used fully so2v capacities of the mark v (single operator two vfo's even
on
different bands, using two decoding windows ), the cluster was used for
multi's
during the second part of the contest.
I reveived many "letter"reports eg "pqp", stations off freq, ... but the
rtty
operators is growing and learning.
I believe that the participators and scores in rtty contest will increase in
the
future.
Thanks for al the qso 's
Equipment: Mark V at 150w AFSK in so2v, th6dxx at 24 m , 2 el wire delta
loop
for 40 m at 24 m (switchable refl-dir) , 2 el delta loop 80m at 24 m
(reflector)
Writelog and mmtty: what a combo !
1 l coffee, 250 grams of chocolade and -drinks, food made by Ria and served
by
my two daughters.
