You will all have seen the lists of claimed scores which are posted
after every RTTY contest. They must be popular with some contesters;
personally I rarely post a score after a test. The whole idea seems
depressing as such a list can only tell you if you have done badly .. it
can never tell you that you have won! There are some more serious
problems for a contest manager when these lists appear.
I looked at the recent mail headed "2005 BARTG Sprint - All Claimed
Scores 27Jan2005". As BARTG Contest Manager I know that this is
nonsense; maybe it should read "2005 BARTG Sprint - Claimed scores sent
by a few contesters to someone who has no connection with the BARTG
Sprint".
This might seem unimportant but I already have mail from 3 worried
contest entrants. They have sent in a contest log to BARTG, it has been
acknowledged, but because their claimed score is not in this list they
think that there is a problem. Worse still are the couple of complaints
I get every year, after the results are posted, from the unfortunates
who have sent a score to some list but not to the contest sponsor. They
really think that they have entered the contest and that the list is an
official BARTG route for their entry. The first info you see on the
unofficial list is the correct place to send the log, but it gets
ignored.
My other concern is with the general feel of the contest and how the
classes are set up for every different test. One example ... I have
always been against any form of high power / low power division, as such
a rule is completely unenforceable in a world-wide contest. Neither of
the BARTG contests will have such rules while I am manager. Now look at
the "claimed scores" list .. suddenly we appear to have high power, low
power and QRP classes! All this does is cause confusion for the
beginners and less well informed in our ranks.
As a matter of interest the list above showed 114 claimed scores. About
40 of those stations have not yet sent in logs to BARTG, but we already
had 540 logs submitted when the list was posted. Keep them coming to:
ska@bartg.demon.co.uk
if you want to be in the results, not just the brag list!
Cheers,
John GW4SKA
