I ran MMTTY, RITTY and a ST-8000 simultaneously a couple of years ago
in the CQ WW RTTY test. I did not find a clear winner. I think because
of its ubiquitous installation, MMTTY is the best choice for almost
everyone. Works on all windows sound cards, XP,98se,95, etc. I think it
was slightly more accurate most of the time. RITTY also is a top
performer but the configuration issues (no NT-based OSs, ISA sound
cards, etc.) make it more difficult, that plus it costs money. The
ST-8000 actually copied better than I had guessed prior to the test.
As I believe in Don's recommendation to have a couple of different
modem types for diversity, I would tend to take a soundcard-based modem
(MMTTY or RITTY) and a hardware based one (I have ST-8000, AEA PK-900,
etc.) Its a tweak, not a requirement for entry into the big leagues
though.
My view, load up MMTTY, play in a few tests, if you feel you are really
missing something, borrow something else and run them in parallel.

I sure would like to get some input as to what everyone thinks about
the HAL ST-8000 vs. sound cards. If you have used the HAL and the
sound card what if any difference to you see? I have used them side
by and side and see little if any difference. At times one will print
when the other won't.
The reason for this is that I am thinking of going with the sound
cards with a SO2R to cut down on some of the equipment in the radio
room and thought that would be a good place to start but didn't want
to comprise the printing.
Also just got a Yaesu FT-1000MP MV and can't seem to get the filters
configured the way I would like. In the CW mode they work FB - Normal
- then Nar1 the 500 and Nar2 the 250. However when selecting the data
mode (rtty and lsb) only normal and Nar2 will work. I installed the
YC114 and the YC115 filters. Will I need the additional YC110 to get
the desired selection?
If anyone has additional info in the soundcard FT-1000MP connections
they would like to pass along that would be appreciated as well.
Sorry for all the questions but getting ready to make some major
changes and want to try and get it right the first time.
Thanks guys
Nick
