There have been many discussions recently on the USB devices, seems like
people have mixed results. I use one for PTT/CW keying with NO PROBLEMS,
but I had trouble with mine running a CAT interface I built.
I also use a PCMCIA serial card by Socket Communications and it is FLAWLESS.
I have some old DOS applications that address the serial ports directly.
They won't run under Windows XP unless I use third party software that
emulates those memory addresses and in turn drives the serial port. That
setup works find for onboard serial ports, but the USB devices I've tried
just won't work (probably a driver issue - point is I couldn't get them to
work). However, the PCMCIA/socket card works perfectly! Socket makes them
with 1, 2, and 4 serial ports on a card. The only drawback is they're a
little pricey compared to the USB adapters, but they seem bullet-proof to
me.

A few questions to "whom may answer", as I'm not a computer freak...
1- Does the messages below mean that not any USB to COM adapter, will be
usable
for FSK-keying (with MMTTY for example)? I am a bit surprised, because it
should not be more difficult to key FSK than CW... no? (also remember having
read something in MMTTY manual about USB adaptor -some settings to be done,

2- Does anybody have experience with PCMCIA cards which provide COM-ports

laptops which do not have them "built-in" anymore (most of the recent
machines).
Is the problem the same with those cards for TTY/CW keying ?
3- what is the definitive answer when you need COM-ports on a laptop - I 'm
planning to buy a new machine, but would need one that allow me to use at
least
1 COM port for FSK/CW keying / 1 for the transceiver (+ 1 in reserve for a
packet TNC...).
4- Does anybody know if there is a specific problem when you use laptop-
manufacturers port-extenders (like for IBM T41), or COM ports provided by
the
docking station?
Strange to see that what was easy with previous generation machines is now
becoming a problem...

I use 3 cheap (about 9 euro each) 'usb to comport' from Digitus/Prolific
Technology Inc. for : Com4= PTT + FSK, Com5=TS-480, Com6=Packet.
