At one time, the northeastern US metropolitan corridor has quite a lot of
electrified rail lines. I don't know if that is still true, but I suspect that
a considerable number of hams live near such lines. Perhaps they could advise
what interference results from those lines.

Subject: [RFI] Politics and RFI
A few comments, especially for Ontario hams on this List.
Re- contacting the AM broadcasters about RFI to their signal- they are well
aware of the problem. They know the increased noise floor and loss of listeners
-due to RFI - is a growing problem. In a recent submission for a new FM BC Band
licence, a Toronto AM powerhouse sighted increased digital noise from rampant
household digital devices- (with SMPS the usual culprit) . Their solution to
this problem? Not asking for better enforcement or better regulations, but to
basically abandon AM and transition to FM. Some also try to request higher AM
power to combat higher noise levels at the listeners QTH- but none have
bothered mounting any kind of campaign to protect the AM BC allocation. Where
is the broadcasters association in all this? They don’t seem to care either.
I think the sell off of the spectrum for a new digital service is unavoidable -
and they know it, so why waste the money trying to keep AM BC radio RFI free.
“Liberal” Ontario is also going to convert our regional Diesel “GO train”
system to electric. (Global warming you know) I believe they will also use an
overhead wire system, (seen in an early drawing) but I’ve not recently confirm
. If so, this will be a real RFI problem for the RF spectrum , as others have
witnessed.
The country-wide legalization of Pot and allowance of “home growing ops” will
also have residential grow-lights adding to the S-9 buzz, hash and noise.
The lack of any prevention or abatement plan by Canadian RF stakeholders is
puzzling and astounding.
