I experienced the .LOG or .TXT confusion when submitting last year's
Sweepstakes logs in Cabrillo format. At the time there was conflicting
information between the ARRL web page and the article in the November QST.
One said use .LOG and one said .TXT was OK.
I wrote ARRL Contest Branch Manager Dan Henderson who advised:

"Without a file extension (.log) we can not automatically process the log
without manually renaming it. Please resubmit with the proper name
protocols. One log with a problem doesn't require a lot of effort on our
end - a hundred with problems becomes a major headache."

In regards to the " / call sign " situation - This past December friends and
I participated in the ARRL 10M contest from French St Martin using the call
sign FS/W2JJ. When writing the Cabrillo format entry CT created a file
called "W2JJ" in a folder/file called "FS". This W2JJ file contained the
actual Cabrillo log. Apparently CT does this with all " / " call signs. A
folder named for whatever is before the " / " will contain the actual log
file which will be named whatever was after the " / ". All one need do is
rename the second file (in my case the W2JJ file) and submit it with the
proper extension. Because the " / " character can't be used in a file name I
renamed the W2JJ file (that was sitting in the "FS" folder) as "FS_W2JJ". To
be sure this would be acceptable I wrote Dan Henderson who replied:

"FS_W2JJ is fine, in fact it's the way we suggested in the "Coping with
Cabrillo" article in November's QST".

To recap - the ARRL Contest Branch Manager confirmed that all Cabrillo logs
must have an .LOG extension and the "_" character is the suggested
substitute for the " / " character for naming logs for portable operations.
