Of course, BEING part of a DXpedition onsite team is great! I've done CY0
once, and CY9 twice, and many other DXVacation operations around the
world.. It can be tough and hard but is a lot of fun. Great bonds with
all the ops. That is STILL a huge part of what a DXpedition is (and can
be). However, we live in a different world today. Many governments are
restricting access. The costs associated with sending a crew to a
far-off place in getting out of control. The upcoming Bouvet is just the
latest example (So much money that mismanagement is involved.) Lowering
the number of ops from say 12 to 6 or 4 on a DXPedition can cut the cost by
50 or 75%, because most of the cost is involved in getting people there.
When you work a remote-only
DXPed on CW or SSB, you still are working an op, from that entity. I'm not
as excited about FT8 -- though it is a winner to get many in the log, and
is perfectly legit.
There is the mechanical (radio QSOs) and then there is the operators. We
who do remote operating for DXpeds have great relationships with our
co-ops, and have great memories from these operations. Besides -- nobody
remembers the QSOs -- they
remember the people. This does not change with remote ops in
DXPeditions.
There is no right answer here. What I can tell you is that if entities
show up with remote-only operators, people will work them. If you don't
think it's interesting, don't work it. In that case, you probably have
the luxury of already having the entity in your DXCC totals. Obviously,
you would not participate as a remote op -- but that's fine because there
are many new ops with great skills in our ranks who can do the job.
This is the new era of DXPeditioning, and it is inclusive for all.
