I'll agree with Doug that CQWW is a great contest. Let's remember that not
everyone is "in it to win it". Instead, the majority get on to see the
thrill of packed bands, the sound of hearing your first DX station on 40
meters when there is still four hours of daylight left, the sound of the
first peep of 10 meters as the sun rises over the horizon, and the thrill
of busting the pileup to that XU9 that fired up her radio for the first
time in hour 38 of the contest.
Guys (and gals) like Mike K9NW and Champ E21EIC go to places like C9 and
A5, respectively, knowing their odds of winning are long. They go (I
believe) to be a part of the greatest event in amateur radio. Even those
who go to KH6 or V4 or J6 go because for 48 hours they get to drive a fast
horse in a huge stampede.
