Hans,
I heard a similar instance with a VE6 on 20m. I needed the mult, but the
pileup was so unruly. Then about an hour later, I saw him spotted on
160m and went there - nice and quiet with a good signal, so had the qso
quickly into the log (that was my only qso on 160m!). I think he moved
there just to get out of the fray.
I do think that in SS in particular, some of the operators in the rarer
sections are scared off by the huge pileups that occur. Especially if
the station in the section is not as skilled in handling high speed
pileups. I had single qso/section in VY1, PR and VI. All these three
were seasoned contesters. I hate to think what would happen if a newly
licensed operator came on the air from VY1!!
