You're backwards. Likely nothing special happened then.
2017-1958 + 14 (or 15 or 16, the age of young hams at the time) would put
the age of the folks you worked at roughly mid 70's.
Folks are dying off or are not physically able to contest anymore as their
health has deteriorated or they
are in a retirement home (no antennas).
The single digits before 1958 you note are the luckier/heathier survivors
