Actually.. we can end this entire discussion with the total and end all
acceptance of on line only.. no rf .. contesting. Talk about the end of ALL
controversy over SDR vw "real" radios.. my antenna is better'n your antenna..
and the East vs West.. vs Black hole crowd just went down. NO more.. just on
line contesting.. in fact.. it can be a contest of your own timing.. Rules
would read something like.. here is the contest.. download it.. install it..
and run it, at your own leisure. Results will be automatically submitted at the
end of the contest period. (2 - 48 hrs. the contest is preset) The noise, qrm,
is preset, as is the propagation. Band, power, station config, and antennas are
all select-able. And the on the air gang would be out of the single most
target-able subject and left with no reason to NOT get on the air.

Now.. for the rest of us.. we'll play radio.. including on the air contests..
just like always. And.. compare our scores.. pretty much like we always have.

Have a great day,

It is never as simple as SO2R vs SO1R

Until we all use the same radio and antenna there will be variations

My fist SO2R setup was a FT101E and a TS820

This progressed to a pair of FT102 Yaesu's and then to a FT990 and a FT1000D
and finally to a FT2000 and a FT950

This current pair have a $10 TV Dongle added to the IF to deliver full spec an
capability on both rigs - But an Icom 756 has similar capability out of the box

We all have variations in location, equipment ,technical ability - operator
skill that a simple SO2R SO1R comparison is not realistic - a good SO2R op will
gain advantage -most of the time.

The best suggestion I can give, is to strive to have the best station you can
and compare your best scores to your own - These are called a CONTEST and not a
Participation event - you may not always win a Certificate.

Jeff,
I have always contested for fun. When it is not fun I will stop.

I do have to take exception with your statement "If the guys who do SO2R didn't
do it they would still beat you". Too many other factors to make a broad
statement like that. And you make the statement "Sure my scores were better
when I did SO2R". So by your reckoning SO2R will result in a higher score over
a SO1R.

I still feel SO1R and SO2R should be separate classes.

All this talk about SO1R vs SO2R doesn't really matter. If the guys who do SO2R
didn't do it they would still beat you because they all have a good station and
good operating skills. I never really understood the logic for NAQP that
running 100 watts levels the playing field. The type of antennas you are using
is what really makes the difference.

I used to do SO2R but sold all of my stuff this Summer. I was only using it for
a couple contests a year. Sure my scores were better when I did SO2R but I
still had plenty of SO1R stations beat me all the time because I have an
inferior station. (All wires) It just didn't seem worth the effort anymore.

I just do contests for fun now. If I can have fun running some rate I will be
on doing that. But if it becomes too much work or I'm not having fun I shut off
the radio.

Truthfully those who have all the toys and outstanding operating skills always
win. Same as it is in any competitive sport. While I would like to see
different classes in contests for those of us who aren't as fortunate I doubt
it would ever happen.
