"Since 1970"... Winning from zone 3 was possible even through the 1980s
because of the high number of Asian - Japanese - stations. Now long since
gone! And the increasing number of BYs do not make up for the significant
reduction in JA.

At the risk of being contrarian for its own sake, I wonder what's different
about CQWW SSB, because there have been (relatively speaking) lots of
winners from outside of the east coast in that contest. Since 1970...

AI6V
K6AHV
K7RI
N2IC/5
N7DD
W6RR (3x)
W7RM
WM5G

Have won CQWW SSB.

Granted, K1AR has won something like 14 times in the same time period, but I
wonder what's up with SSB that makes it possible for non-W1/W2/W3/W4
stations to win when it's so rare in CW? All of the stations above were
competing with big east coast stations.

Chris WF3C
