It's an interesting thought but color me a skeptic.  I simply 
don't know that two or three receivers per continent would give 
enough coverage to be useful.  There is a great difference in 
propagation between South Florida and North Carolina ... between 
Washington/Baltimore and Central Ohio ... between Central Ohio 
and Chicago/Milwaukee/Madison, etc.  While I don't have any 
experience in the rest of the world, I strongly suspect the 
same can be said about any two places separated by more than 
1000 km.  

In addition to the propagation differences, at 80 KHz per 
receiver is would take at least three receivers per band to 
do the job on phone. 

Then there are the issues of antenna design - the antennas 
need to be reasonably high performance or you may not be able 
to confirm the very thing you need in terms of weak multipliers, 
etc.  

I'm not saying it will not work ... I am saying the effort is 
considerably more involved than 10 or 12 receivers scattered 
around the world.
