SO IS THE CODE TEST! One can take the latest code tests with absolutely no
knowledge of the code whatsoever and still get 2.5 questions right by just
guessing. Now just study enough to copy a QTH and name and your up to 5 out
of 10. You only need 2 more to pass. Anybody with the least bit of DESIRE
can pass it these days with very little study I'd say. It's a streetcar
named DESIRE that is lacking.

Aaron, I agree completely. Several years ago a friend of mine wanted to learn
morse code as a present to her father on his birthday. He was a ham and had
always hoped that she would have some interest in the hobby.
I got her some code tapes to teach her the alphabet. She listened to them
daily in the car on the way to work. Several evenings a week we went to a
local bar for beer and chicken wings. While there, the entire conversation
was in morse code. This total immersion worked extremely well. Two weeks
after we began, she came over to my shack and she had a qso with her father
on 40 meter cw. I made the initital call during our sked and they carried on
a cw ragchew for twenty minutes. Unfortunately, that was the last time she
ever used the code. But if she can go from not even knowing the alphabet to
ragchewing in two weeks, it shouldn't be out of the question for anyone that
wants to learn the code to reach at least 5 wpm (she was doing 10 wpm).

Hi !
I have now used a TS-850S for DX-ing and contesting for some time,
and I'm very pleased with it.
While listening on my own SSB modulation with the "monitor" function,
I heard a distinct noise, like an ignition noise.
First a suspected the power supply, but after some measurements
(it's a DAIWA PS33 II) it was ruled out.
Today I noticed for the first time that the noise varies with the
position of the mike, strange I thought, and started scaning the shack
with the mike trying to get a maximum.
Now I have finally detected the source, the PC monitor is inducing noise
in the microphone, (MC43). While the noise level is quite low (but fully
hearable) 1 foot from the screen, when holding the mike perpendiculary to
the screen at a distance of 2" the noise is modulating the Tx with some 30 W
of power.
The sides of the monitor (a Commodore 1930) seam to radiate as well.
The reason I'm posting this is that some rigs don't have a monitor
function making detection of a possible problem difficult. Other hams don't use
headphones yet again making it impossible to detect.
And since the problem only occurs when transmitting on phone it doesn't
make it any easier to detect.
