Should anyone be interested in ads for Angolan contesting software
and the like, could I, too, do some free advertizing because I
believe this is the best way to reach my fellow Angolan contesters
*around the world*

Geeee, cut the crap!

Aha, Bob! My point, exactly! Many of our clubs are now dominated
by No-Coders and Won't-Coders who aren't interested in promulgating
anything other than their own special interests: the local repeater!

Where is Contesting headed with this trend? Where is Ham Radio
headed with this trend? Ode to Ham Radio: Enjoy Contesting while ye may!
It may not be here as long as we are unless we get off our duffs
and start a movement to require No-Coders and Won't-Coders to
upgrade or lose it!

John, I am the proud Elmer of a fairly large number of current General-or-
higher class hams, including Mike Gibson (KH6ND - twice World Champion in the
ARRL DX Contests - Both CW and SSB, and has won the CW contest Worldwide
in the ARRL DX Contests 6 times.) I will go through Hell to help anyone
who is trying to help themselves: I wouldn't give Hell room to anyone
that doesn't want to even try! I take my hat off to no one when it comes
to Elmering, however I see the flood of self-content no-coders who refuse
to even consider upgrading as being the absolute destruction of Amateur
Radio. I believe it will eventually lead to a 1VHF/UHF repeater-only type
operation (by statute) for all hams within a 20 year period... even that
may be destroyed by the LEOs! WHERE WILL CONTESTING BE THEN? Where
will Ham Radio be? Nowhere!

As for the comments of others on this subject that alluded to the need to
increase the ranks of amateurs: at what cost to our service is this to be?
Is this a variation of the "Peace in our time - Peace at any cost" doctrine?
Sorry, gents. The arrogant, complacent, and self-satisfied attitude I've
personally witnessed on the part of "Won't Coders" is potentially
destructive of all of Ham Radio as it has been for 80 some odd years.

<<Snip>>
>As one of those that came in to Ham Radio as a No-Code Tech, I will say

<<Snip>>

Roman, I must not have made my position clear. I apologise for that.
Those former No-code Techs that have upgraded have my undying respect.
It is the No-Coders that arrogantly, self-indulgently REFUSE to even TRY
to upgrade, and who are quite smug about it, that I am upset with. I
have run across a number of them. They only seem to want to run around
with an HT stuck in their ear or wear it around their belt for non-hams
to Ohhh! and Ahhh! about. These individuals that won't even try to
upgrade, who have absolutely no idea about the rest of Hamdom (and don't
want to put out any effort to find out) are the welfare parasites of
Ham Radio I was speaking about. I should have made that more clear.

I have "Elmer'd" about 20 hams. I am most proud of KH6ND, Mike Gibson,
who became one of the finest CW Contesters in the world. I introduced
Mike to Ham Radio when he was 12 years old, 28 years ago and encouraged
him to engage in contests, especially in CW.

At the age of 65, I am still working with 4 hams to upgrade. Even though
I have some serious health conditions that will eventually bring about my
demise, I have recently (last 4 months) assembled a 60 foot and a 77 foot
tower and put antennas on them for new General class hams that I've helped
up from the Tech ranks. I'll continue to do so as long as I am alive.
I am encouraging them to engage in contest work, as well. I will go to
any length to help someone that is trying to help themselves. I wouldn't
give Hell room to anyone that won't even try and is smug about it.

Again, I apologize for not making it clear that my remarks were NOT
intended toward those former No-Code Techs that have upgraded.

A perspective from the DX side:

> "QRL?" before starting to call CQ.
> - If you transmitted "DL1?" WORK THE DL1 - wait till you can complete his

Let's say you are working a pileup and hear DL1? You reply to the DL1 and on
receive there are still 4 or 5 stations calling you. You can tell the DL1
is in there calling but you can fully copy IK0XYZ. What next?

In a contest, the goal is to maximize your score. Should you waste time
digging out the DL1 or go ahead and work the IK0. I always log the first
full callsign I receive. (During SSB tests, this confuses some loud ops
who only give their last 2 letters!)

Don't get me wrong, I would prefer to work the DL1 I first replied to but
by working the IK0, the rate is better. If the DL1 were a multiplier, I
might be try harder to work him but as a competitor trying to win, score
(rate) is king.

> - Don't ever work a station without calling "QRZ?". Tail-ending seems so
> tempting but DON'T DO IT. You do one tail-ender and you will never be
> able to really complete a QSO!

A good tail end is a DX station's delight - it can really boost the rate.
Often, you can complete a QSO before the rest of the pile knows what
happened. Unfortunately, it is a rare occurance. In this years CQWW, I can
only recall 8 or 10 ops who executed a proper tail-end. There were dozens of
others who were not as good at the technique and had to wait their turn
like the rest of the pile.

> If you don't follow this - you'll never calm a zero beat pile up down!

For a big zero beat pile - just move the RIT up or down a few hundred Hz.
If you are on 80 or 160 and the pile can't hear through the others calling -
then it is time to go split.

> Should be easy!

It is not easy because every pile is a dynamic and different situation.
If you always operate by a strict set of rules, you are not operating most
efficiently. You must be flexible enough to know when to accept
tailenders, when to go split etc. It is easy only when just one station
is calling - HI!

I am reading alot of messages on this mode called CW. Its the ONLY
mode!

This past summer our local club did a survey and a count on class of
licenses of each member. Out of 120 (+/-) members the club has about
6-9 Extra Class members, maybe the same Advanced, the No-Coders was 63%
of the overall membership. I was not surprised at all. The club is a
repeater club, only about 3-4 contesters (got that word in). Don't take
me wrong, 2 meters FM is fine, its also a glorified CB band. I hear alot
of these No-Coders on the local repeater using just the suffix of their
call alot of times instead their complete call, maybe they've been
listening to the nets. Go to simplex and they never ID. What has
happen to ham radio?

Someone said they detest this No-Code license. I ditto that. You know
who you have to thank for the push of this license.

I am the organizer for the local Field Day here, we run 2A every year.
I can not find one individual that wants to run CW, begging and pleading
doesn't even do any good. Its always myself and whoever I recruit from
Columbus to run the CW station with me.

Well I said my 2 cents on this issue, whats next? No-Written type
license?

One of the major benefits (in fact, perhaps the ONLY benefit) that
many of us derive from our subscription to this remailer is the
opportunity to "sit at the feet" and learn from some of the masters
of the art of contesting.

Were it not for the occasional story from the likes of ZO or ZD,
I would long ago have unsubscribed under the weight of vanity call
traffic, pork-producer descriptions, and messages in other tongues.

I vote to allow, nay ENCOURAGE, traffic such as the totally excellent
story from K5ZD.

I now return the net to the no-code bashers.

Anyone have the statistics stating how many "No-Coders" upgrade.
I don't know, but would bet the percentage that stays on the repeaters
talking to mama and ordering pizza is high!
Probably higher than the percentage of the "my nose bleeds, so I can't
take the cw test" extras!

I'm not sure that having a NOMAIL feature is relevant. NOMAIL is
important on CQ-Contest because we have the mailing list confifugred
so that you *must* be a subscriber in order to post messages. This is
to "keep out the riff-raff" like messages that say SUBSCRIBE, and
Internet email spammers. It very possible that you might receive the
CQ-Contest messages in digest form from JE1CKA, but you wish to
contribute to the discussion. You *must* subscribe in order to
contribute, but you can set NOMAIL so that you won't receive the
messages from both places.

On the other hand, the 3830 mailing list has no such limitation.
Anyone can post message to that list. If you want to receive mail
from it, then subscribe. If you don't to receive mail from it, then
don't subscribe. Personally, I don't subscribe to 3830, but I use the
WWW interface if I want to find a score, and I find that I am not even
doing that any more now that WA4ZXA is monitoring 3830 and posting
summaries here.
