I just ran the keps for O-13 during FD...yuck! One hour pass with the
elevation above 10 degrees AND a MAX elevation of 15 degrees..thats it!
Plan B...use the RS birds. Problem with plan B..unknown freqs.
Does anyone out there in contest land have the freqs for RS-10/11 and
RS-12/13???
Would appreciate the help.

I think you're correct, Jim. I recall same, and have a QSL from June '61
showing 579 CW rpt in Dick's red ink on black print card.

add two of my early DX stories.

Of course, this is Bob Denniston, W0DX--VP2VI--W0NWX, past president of
ARRL in the late 60s. As VP1JH in the 1960 ARRL DX contest, he was my first
DX QSO. He was calling CQ TEST on 21.098 and I called for an hour with no luck
at 21.102, my only crystal in the 15M novice band. I finally took apart the
FT-243
crystal and grabbed my pencil and scribbled on the crystal, lowering its
frequency enough so that he heard me (not absolutely sure I was still in the
novice band, but I wanted that QSO!). Actually, I was a guest op at K0VBU's
station. (I was KN0UTX at the time.) 20 years later I was on a DXpedition
with Bob to Desecheo and told him the story about him being my first DX QSO
and sliding my way down to the very bottom of the novice band (or a little
bit more)
and he said the story was the highlight of our trip together.

Now my KV4AA story!
My shack was in my parents' basement, and I had driven a nail into the
floor joist above the rig to mount a roll of solder so it would hang down
onto the operating position, allowing me to act like I was SUPERTECH--
able to build or repair anything on a moments notice--solder always at hand.
I had just upgraded from novice to general later in 1960 and bought a
Globe Chief Deluxe to replace my novice 6L6 40M oscillator/transmitter (but
I had no 20M antenna yet) when I first heard KV4AA calling CQ high in the
20M CW band. Out of desperation to work some DX, I grabbed the end of that
solder and stuck it in the antenna relay with probably no more than 4 ft of
solder as an antenna (top loaded by the 1 pound spool on the nail, of course).
And this was all below ground level. I gave Dick my call once and he came
right
back with a 579. I was elated and stunned at the same time, and figured it
was just a fluke. So I called him again the next day with the same solder
antenna
and he again gave me the proverbial 579. It wasn't a wet noodle but close
enough.
Dick could really hear, but I didn't really believe the 579 he gave me--now
I know
he gave everyone a 579!
