Well, I finally reached critical mass of comments, so here they are:
1. Funny phonetics are not real useful, but I will never forget the chuckle
I got one year in FD when double-you six underwear called me. Anyone
remember WB4 Kentucky Fried Worms from the Bicentennial?
2. Field day isn't a contest... it is an excuse to get out of the house
and try your slingshot out, and to show emergency prepardness. Packet
has value in an emergency, so being able to use this mode in an
emergency set-up should be encouraged. The fact that you may not be
able to tell if you are using radio or not is more of an indication
that Ham Radio is becoming obsolete for emergency communication than
anything else. The CAC shouldn't have a big say in what happens in
Field Day at any rate.
3. I turned on the TS-930 I was fixing for W7RM on Sunday morning and handed
out a few QSOs. Two of the first three QSOs I made told me I was a dupe.
Even my Z80 gets frustrated running this contest and would rather sit
in the closet. (oops, did I say contest?).
4. I agree with N2IC. I actually look forward to the RadioSport as it is
a fun contest, but I think I am glad it is only 24 hours long. See you
there, CW only with 2 radios.
5. My TS-850S has worked perfect during the first year I have had it. It
worked even more perfect after making the MONI pot control the CW monitor
volume and making my software clear the RIT automatically. The lack of
a separate receiving antenna and only 100 watts are probably the biggest
points against it. It is a lot lighter than a TS-930/940/950 if you are
going to travel with it.
6. Don't forget the SprINT contest coming up on July 23rd local time at
0100Z. Rules will be posted in a week or two.
7. Should I hide my 850 from K2MM when he visits this weekend??

Suchadeal. We had JY1 check in once with us at N5AU during CQWW SSB on
10 meters. Even though he's the king, he's still just another guy with
a radio, so there was no reason not to ask him to QSY to 15 for the mult,
right. :-)

Seeing N6TR's comments about having brought out a monitor level adjustment just
gave me a brainstorm. I have a 990, which also has no external monitor level
adjustment. That, in my opinion, is a major drawback, but I've noticed that
most of the rigs in this class are also lacking this ability. Staring at
the front panel, though, I wonder about the idea of rewiring the squelch pot
to become the monitor level pot. That would turn this into a rig with no
squelch adjustment. but so what? If you were on the market for a used 990,
would having the squelch rewired to become the monitor level pot be a plus
or minus? I should mention that this is only for the CW sidetone; the 990
has no sideband signal monitor.

Saturday evening we put WN8PEE's thirteen year old son, Patrick on 40m
phone. He talked (excitedly) while I logged using NA. He would read the
calls off the computer monitor. He pushed the speedometer over 200/hr
several times! The kid had a blast! If he'd kept at it we probably
would have beat George's 2800 Q's and 700 dupes. And I never had to say a
word. Anybody can do it .... just talk fast...

Yes, indeed. One of the major reasons our club used CT 9 this year
instead of CT 8.53 is that CT 8 only goes down to 22 wpm. Sheesh.
