I believe the MAX 7219 is not a microprocessor, but merely an
inexpensive display driver. This is fortunate, because it means no
programming of a microprocessor is required. The MAX 7219 is available
in several packages. If you have a photo of the PCB, you can match the
package to the correct version of the device. With luck, you’ll be
able to use the 7219 with an easy-to-replace dual inline version. The
price is a dollar or two for a replacement.
