I thought there was.a design on QEX at one time. But maybe it was QST?
There are some consumer microwaves that use AC/DC converters in switchmode.

We have commercial 10 kW Glassman switchers at work that put out 1500 VDC at 6 
Amps but they are not cheap. They power screen grid on TH628L RF tube.
