I think the forward drop is the essentially the same for both diodes. Unless the circuit depends on the diode breaking down when reverse biased, I don;t know why there would be any difference. My guess is that the 1N4001s were a wee bit cheaper than the 1N4007 whenever MFJ bought the lot. That said I'm more than happy to be educated!

Meters have always behaved badly.  Manual says when this happens, then D117 may be shorted.  I have the amp opened, and this diode tests shorted.

Manual says this diode "protects the overload circuit and the meters."

It's a 1N4001.  I can't find any around here.  I have about 1x10E18 1N4003 diodes.  Can I use a 1N4003?
