I think the forward drop is the essentially the same for both diodes.
Unless the circuit depends on the diode breaking down when reverse
biased, I don;t know why there would be any difference. My guess is that
the 1N4001s were a wee bit cheaper than the 1N4007 whenever MFJ bought
the lot. That said I'm more than happy to be educated!
