AJ,

All I have ever done is go to my local motor rewinding shop.

Last time there I purchased 400 feet of 21 ga, iirc I paid $50.00 about
6 months back.

You overpaid by a factor of at least 10!

They have it by the mile; are quite reasonable to sell it too you if
you are nice to them.

Selling at 2000% profit, I think anyone would be nice to the customer... :-)

But yes, motor and transformer winding shops will often sell the wire. It can be good to take along your own spool, specially if it fits one of their winding machines. Otherwise they may hand you the wire as a loose bundle, and that can easily become a tangly and knotty affair.

Magnet wire is usually traded by weight. In my environment, prices go from about US$10 per kilogram for the larger sizes, up to about $30/kg for the smallest ones (like AWG#40).

Stores that sell it in very small quantities over the web might charge a lot more.

Manfred
