Actually Kettering invented the ignition circuit which includes coil, breaker points(and condenser of course) and the distributor. And the year was 1907

Carl,

It has been called a condensor ever since the distributor was invented. Called that by people from all walks of life and education,
 DIY parts houses.

And in fact that's probably the correct word! Early electronics books too called it condenser or condensor, and the word relates directly to the Spanish "condensador" and the German "Kondensator", among others. The modern English word "capacitor", although so familiar to us, seems to be a construction. Just like "inductor" instead of "coil", and "voltage" instead of "tension" or "potential". Some people even say "amperage" instead of "current", "wattage" instead of "power", and so on! Ugh!
