Its pretty hard to beat the old RCA Receiving Tube Manuals of the 40-60's
for the basics and it takes you into the curves that seem to confuse many.
Radiotron Designers Handbook 4th Edition takes it a lot deeper altho its
still geared to receiving and other low power circuitry.
