Well, Heathkit didn't actually die, they are still very much in business. It
is just that they got out of the electronic kit business.
Basically, it was due to economics. When the Japanese got into producing
amateur radio equipment the prices dropped to the point that it was possible to
purchase a completely built unit for the same, or even less, price than you had
to pay for a Heathkit.
A lot of the incentive for purchasing a kit was the cost factor. Building the
kit yourself was a "perk", but the main reason was that you could get a unit
that worked very well for substantially less than you could purchase a "ready
built" unit. But, when the price of "ready built" units dropped then the lure
of building your own to save money was eliminated.
