Shell Diala is the oil of choice. A LOT cheaper than Bird's replacement oil and juist as effective if not better. Yes, the oil can "wear out," most commonly by becoming contaminated by humidity. Remember, the load has a vent cap. A burnt smell would also cause me concern for the resistor. Do you have an antenna analyzer you can use to sweep the load?
