Boy, is that a mistake. Building something myself is a lot more expensive
than going down to the store and buying it. To make the chassis look good,
I buy hole punches. Then, I need a milling machine and lathe, a painting
booth, a compressor, a bending brake and shear are almost essential and on
and on.
I am now trying to figure out how to get an engraving machine so I can get
nice front panels - one step up from the decals.
Pretty soon, I have $20,000 of equipment and have to drive around in an old
truck because I have spent so much money on tools to build an amplifier. I
painted the amp, but did not like the color, so have to strip it and do it
again. Now, I am selecting knobs. The ones I picked do not look good on
the amp.
I had to find just the right meters, then custom make the meter scale, after
buying software to do that.
I could have gone out and put in some extra hours working at minimum wage,
shared part of the earnings with the governments and purchased a nice
looking Ameritron. I do not operate RTTY, so the Ameritron would work fine.
Hope my wife does not find this confession.
