All (quite a number, actually) of the 120 volt AC relays I've tried and
tested have not closed at 12 volts DC, not even with help. Many will close
at about 18 to 20 volts, some needing a nudge. All will close at what
appears to be proper speed at 26 volts DC.
None exhibited over-heating.
