Mine idles at around 120 ma. The problem is cooling, efficiency and plate
v. I imagine to run a 200 w. carrier, (amp tuned up for pep ~ 800 w.) it would be probably only 40 or 50% efficient. That means around 500 w. input. With 3 kv we're talking around 165 ma plate current for the carrier? 3-500 pairs have been used in 1 kw carrier bc xmitters but, the p.s. is godzilla, the cooling massive, and efficiency high (3-500s also used in modulator for high level modulation. I'm thinking of an old RCA xmitter a friend told me about). The Henry 2K console is probably the only ham 3-500 amp with the cooling and p.s. that could improve on the problems of the Centurion (but not the efficiency). I can install a Bi-Sonic fan that is similar to the stock fan, but has higher rpm and moves about 25% more air (105 CFM), add an external fan on top of the rf deck blowing down onto the anodes moving say, 50 CFM, and a 3rd fan on the right side of the rf deck just outside of the tube pair drawing air out of the rf deck and sockets to insure no hot air stays inside, that moves 160 to 200 CFM. That would double the amount of air moving thru the amp for a given time period. I am gg to investigate trying this, if no one has any cautionary advice I have not thought of, and see how it goes. If this has no improvement, i probably need to get a different design. The cabinet will not be sealed, so I do not think a fan drawing air out with a CFM higher than the sum of the two blowing in, will damage the two blowing air in. Their official response (contained in the manual) is for keydown operation, 650W max, 50% duty cycle, 10 minutes max transmission time (as you know from the manual) I inquired how to derate this for a longer transmission time (say 30 minutes). I speculated that since when operating bias is applied (no rf drive) the amp idles at appx 160 ma yielding a dissipation of 450w, representing just under 50% of the combined dissipation of the two tubes, and I asked, is it 'safe' to let the two tubes run with at this level of dissipation for 30 minutes (the key is up after all). They responded " In theory 450 watts should be safe for key down operation but we could not guarantee the tubes would survive this operation." How does this apply to your AM question. The manufacturer seems to have some reservations about cooling at 450w steady state so, although I'm not sure whether they mean 450 w output or 450 w dissipation (possibly the same). Others on this reflector may be able to use this data point from the manufacturer to predict.
