The rectifier seems to be the key -- you might explore the unusual diode
FAQ at http://margo.student.utwente.nl/el/componen/diodefaq.html. Varo was
bought by Microsemi, and a call to them might get help in identifying what
you have, which should go a long way toward figuring out how it should be
wired.
Also, you could measure the output voltage of the transformer and compare
to the rated voltage on a 3CX800, to help reverse engineer the full wave
vs. voltage doubler issue. A half-wave rectifier would be vanishingly
unlikely, seems to me.
