Confusion here - I think it was a reference to 'average' value compared with
rms value for a sinewave *voltage*. I put 'average' in quotes because a
sinewave has an average value of zero - I understand what Marv(?) was
saying, but it's difficult to explain without a blackboard.

It depends on the waveform, but it's not a useful quantity to calculate.
