My guess is that he knows perfectly well but is more interested in trolling
than anything else. Hence the high incidence of what psychotherapists call
'crossed transactions'. Presumably the payoff is along the lines of Oscar
Wilde's observation that the one thing worse than being talked about is not
being talked about.  

The best treatment for inveterate games players is to decline to take part
in the game. Or, in the vernacular, "don't feed the trolls".
