I've used series capacitors very successfully: less dissipation. Provided
that you reduce the volts on both windings. There might be a reluctance to
start though. If there's only one winding ( i.e. shaded pole) still
shouldn't be a problem. Another method if you have an xfmr with a tapped
primary elsewhere in the equipment is to use that as an auto xfmr - even
better, as it has less effect on power factor.
