Just in case y'all haven't heard about "piggy-back" zener circuits, these
incorporate a small wattage (1-watt) zener "riding" on a good, big, cheap
old power transistor. I have been using this concept for 20 years now with
not a single failure. The circuit consists of only three components, a small
resistor, a small zener and a big, fat old transistor. Polarity is chosen
by PNP or NPN or by isolation.
