I find it impossible to believe, since even 3000 voltage of positive 
grid voltage can't produce more than ten amperes!

Sounds reasonable. Most textbooks seem to support the concept of 
cathode emission.

Not that important, I was just curious what the likely cause 
of the quiescent current variation was.

I think the important point is the gain has little to do with 
neutralization, since that is a feedback capacitance issue. Also that 
idling current has little to do with gain.
