Verily. About he only thing you can test for without plugging one into
an amplifier is gas. At 12kV from anode to screen, you should see no
glow in a dark room.

Amen. Why not use an 8171 in Class AB1 instead instead of an
8166/4-1000A in g-g? Either tube needs about the same amount of chassis
space and drive power. The tank circuits aren't that different. Handles
are handy. The blower for an 8171 in ham service is much quieter than is
the blower for an 8166 with air system socket and chimney. Svetlana has
good prices on tubes with handles.
