Comments:
I knew this would be a challenging contest because I'm on team South Park, and
my name is Ken(ny)! I survived, though, and had some reasonable success. My raw
score is by far my best for the summer version of this contest, and is second
only to my best January score which came earlier this year.
I ran dual pileups for a good portion of the contest, and managed a 260 Q hour
at the start. The key to this technique is to maintain a steady pileup on both
bands, and that's what I got in the first hour. After that, it seemed only one
of the two bands would cooperate and I'd end up sending many unanswered CQ's on
the other band. 20/15 and 40/20 were the best combinations for me. When the
second band really dried up, I would start to S&P there, looking for
multipliers. As usual, when I concentrate on rate, I miss out on what should be
some easy multipliers. For example, I only worked ZF1 and KP4 on one band. I'm
sure they were QRV on the other bands. I didn't do a lot of requests for QSY to
get a new mult. I would guess I was accomodated about half the time when I did.
N1MM says I gained five mults this way. Thanks to the FB ops that helped me
out.
The Denver area "Accu" weather forecast had said there was a very
slight chance of rain, so I didn't pay any attention to what was going on
outside. Besides, my basement shack has no windows. When I took my second break,
I heard some loud thunder. A big line of T-storms had moved in and I had to
disconnect everything. Instead of 30 minutes I had to take on hour off as I
waited for the storms to move east. For the rest of the evening, I had to deal
with some nasty QRN. My apologies to those that had to call me a half dozen
times or more before I could figure out your call. It was brutal. Fortunately,
near the end, the noise abated and I managed to snag a few QSO's on 160M before
my ten hours were up.
The hardest name to figure out was in honor of Denise Nichols from Star Trek may
she rest in peace. It's not a common name. Sorry Chip for asking for several
repeats. I doubt that I'm the only one that needed a repeat, especially if you
aren't a Star Trek fan. The other name that confused me was TUNA. So many people
send "TU" at the start of the exchange that it gets hard wired in my
brain to ignore it. So, this person's name was copied as "NA". I asked
for a repeat and got it corrected.
Kudos to Ken W0ETT who put together the GMCC teams. As usual, Colorado was well
represented.
